Houston: The Bayou City

A cosmopolitan metropolis in Texas known for its rich culture, robust economy, and superb food, Houston houses the historic district, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Minute Maid Park, which puts its visitors in the midst of the action, watching a baseball game with vigour. Visit the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, or take a boat tour of Buffalo Bayou to appreciate its natural beauty. Try your palate on barbecue, Tex-Mex, and seafood, too.

What is Houston?

Houston is also known as “Space City” because of its fabulous association with NASA’s Johnson Space Center, but Houston is also a huge source of energy, healthcare, and aerospace. The city accounts for over 2.3 million people who make up one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the country. Diverse neighborhoods and culinary scenes that mark this diversity are also echoed in world-class museums, hot nightlife, and sports; Houston has something to suit tastes for everyone.

History

It was established as a town in 1836 by two brothers named John and Augustus Allen, who named it after General Sam Houston, who was one of the players who played a fundamental role in Texas’ fight for independence from Mexico. At that time, the city was booming with growth, then with the early cotton industry, business expanded, and later, with the years of the oil industry, the city became stable. It proved to be a petro-polis when in 1901, oil was found at Spindletop. During the 20th century, it expanded widely and drew into it all kinds of people, becoming the main industrial and cultural centre.
