Kullu: Journey Amidst the Backdrop of Himalayas

Resurrected in the backdrop of the mighty Himalayas is the majestic land of Kullu. The enigmatic landscape of the Valley is so breathtakingly beautiful that people often call it “Valley of Gods”.

Kullu is the paradise in disguise, a perfect amalgamation of snow clad mountains, towering Deodar Jungle, breath taking beauty of its miraculous landscape, salubrious weather, ancient temples. The most enthralling part of Kullu is its warm people, their unique culture, tradition, faith, mythology and the extraordinary bond between people and the divine nature.

Location of Kullu

The captivating town of Kullu is an alluring jewel located in the central part of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Kullu is nestled amidst the Himalayas at an altitude of 1230 m above sea level at the confluence of two serpentine and spectacular rivers Beas and Sarvari.

Climate in Kullu

The valley experiences alpine weather which makes it a popular hill station in India. The summer months from April to June are pleasant here while the winters falling in the months from November to February are freezing. The south western monsoon kisses the valley in July and showers its love over Kullu till September.

Best time to Visit Kullu

As the winters are quite harsh, thus the best time to explore Kullu is during summers. The months of April and June are merriment here.

The valley attains its full colour during the Dussera festival as the locals celebrate traditionally and valley peeps up with colours, aroma and excitement for the celebrations. So October is an amazing time to visit the valley.

How to reach Kullu?

‘Tourism is the main occupation of the valley’ therefore, Kullu has a well developed transportation facility.

  • By air : Kullu has its own airport, located just 10 km from the town. The airport is known as Bhuntar Airport.
  • By rail : Jogindernagar Railway station is the nearest railhead, located at a distance of 125 km. Though this narrow gauge railhead is well connected to major cities of India, still rail is not the best way to reach here.
  • By road : If you want to relish the beauty of Himalayan foothills while approaching the valley, then avail the taxi from your city or state-run bus services from Shimla, Pathankot Delhi, Ambala, Chandigarh and Palampur.

Kullu

Places to visit

The town boasts of ancient and magnificent temples which present a marvellous example of excellent architecture and the unwavering devotion of the locals.

Visit the 400 years old Raghunath Temple built in 17th century by Raja Jagat Singh or the Bijli Mahadev Temple built at an astounding height of 2,435 metres. It is the highest point from where the bird eye view of entire town mesmerises the tourists.

Shoja is the spell binding vantage point located at the height of 2,692 m. it gives the most panoramic sight of snow clad mountains, rivers, forests and meadows of Kullu.

Great Himalayan National Park boasts of the privilege of being the 7th UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in India and also the youngest national park spread over an area of 1,171 sq. km.

Activities to do in Kullu

Apart from visiting the charming scenic destinations and temples in Kullu and exploring the vegetation and wildlife of the valley, one can enjoy a range of adventure activities like trekking, river rafting, mountaineering, paragliding and hiking over the Himalayan glaciers. How can we forget angling? That sounds like quite an adrenaline rush for the adventure junkies.

We all remember the ‘Balam Pichkari’ song of ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ and were thrilled by the Holi celebrations of the valley. So why not make our Holi memorable by celebrating in Kullu.

We already told you about the Dusshera celebrations in the valley! The valley is at its colourful best during this time.
