Sharjah: Cultural Capital of the UAE

Experience Sharjah’s perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Discover it at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, visit the Blue Souk, or take a boat tour through the mangroves.

Explore the city’s vibrant arts scene, with galleries, theatres, and cultural festivals. Savor the yummy flavours of Arabic cuisine, including hummus, falafel, and shawarma.

One of such destinations is Sharjah, famous for its antiquity, fantastic architecture, and friendly family atmosphere. It would be a great travel experience and an unforgettable memory for any traveller.

About Sharjah

Sharjah, the third-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates, is considered the “Cultural Capital” of the Arab world. The emirate is renowned for its rich heritage, glamorous arts scene, and eventful community life, which gives tourists a real experience in Emirati culture and history. Sharjah is not like its other commercialist friends, since this emirate opted to preserve its culture and is perfect for those who want to experience the traditional aspect of UAE.

History

Sharjah’s history dates back for thousands of years. Since the Stone Age, the place was already inhabited, and because of its strategic location along the trading routes, the city was an important trading centre. In 1820, Sharjah was founded as a city, and Sharjah played a very important role in developing the UAE. Actually, Sharjah has been an interesting place which has found interest in education, culture, and arts under the governing of Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, who has ruled since 1972, that was then recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its dedication to cultural heritage.

Geographical Landscape

Sharjah lies along the Arabian Gulf coast, bordering Dubai to its south and Ajman in its north. Different landscapes that involve coastal regions, deserts, and mountains are found in the city. The city itself, in modern architecture, faces traditional buildings, parks, and waterfronts set in harmonious tones in the urban landscape.

Best Time to Visit

Sharjah would be at its best if visited between November and March. During these months, the weather has cooled down enough that people can go out and enjoy cultural events, festivals, and exhibitions that happen in the city.

Food to Try

Sharjah’s food scene reflects its people’s cultural diversity. Be sure to try the following:

Shawarma: The traditional Middle Eastern dish of marinated meat in pita with vegetables and sauces.

Hummus: Creamy chickpea paste, great with warm pita bread.

Mandi: it is a fragrant rice cooked with meat and spices served on celebrations.

Falafel: the deep-fried chickpea balls, served in a wrap or as appetizers.

Dates:enjoyed widely as a snack or dessert and often accompanied with Arabic coffee.

Local Language

Sharjah’s official language is Arabic. However, you will realize that the English language is also widely spoken and can easily help find one’s way around this cosmopolitan city. There is a truly unique attraction in Sharjah that combines traditions with culture and modernity, thereby being a stopover for most adventurers in the country. The place is very well blessed with history, diversified attraction, and also very welcoming. Sharjah will thus offer you this broad experience of Emirati culture. Diversed museums, mouthwatering local cuisine, or vibrant markets, Sharjah will surely leave with its unique attraction forever.
