Surya Top Trek

If you’re craving an offbeat Himalayan experience away from the typical trekking crowd, the Surya Top Trek is exactly where your boots should take you. Nestled deep in the lesser-explored Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, this trail offers panoramic views, pristine landscapes, and peace that feels untouched by tourism.
The Surya Top Trek is not merely a destination—it’s a trek through dense pine woods, mountain meadows at high altitudes, and snow-covered ridges with an awe-inspiring 360-degree view of mountains such as Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and the Gangotri range.

Where is Surya Top Located?

The Surya Top Trek starts from Raithal, a tiny village in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Raithal is also the base for the popular Dayara Bugyal trek. Though most trekkers reach as far as Dayara, Surya Top is another few kilometers ahead, providing a serene solitude and untouched nature.
At about 4,000 meters (13,100 ft) above sea level, Surya Top treat trekkers with breathtaking Himalayan scenery and an unearthly silence invaded only by the whistling wind.

Day 1: Dehradun to Raithal (Drive – 7–8 hours)

Start from Dehradun and arrive in the quaint village of Raithal. The journey involves driving through mountain passes, pine groves, and picturesque hill towns.

Day 2: Raithal to Gui (Trek – 4 km)

Begin trekking from Raithal to Gui, a brief but beautiful walk through oak and rhododendron trees. Camp in a serene meadow.

Day 3: Gui to Dayara Bugyal (Trek – 3 km)

As you climb higher, alpine meadows extend with grazing cattle and wildflowers. Dayara Bugyal is a natural balcony overlooking the snow giants.

Day 4: Dayara to Surya Top and return to Gui (Trek – 10 km round trip)

This is the final ascent day. A gradual ascent takes you to Surya Top, where you enjoy a clear, wide-angle view of Himalayan giants. Take time in enjoying the silence before returning to camp.

Day 5: Gui to Raithal and drive back to Dehradun

Come back down to Raithal and drive back to Dehradun, finishing your unforgettable trek.

Why Surya Top Trek is Special

Yes, there are hundreds of treks in the Indian Himalayas, but the Surya Top Trek is special for a couple of lovely reasons:

  • Offbeat and Uncrowded: Unlike Kedarkantha or Brahmatal, Surya Top is not on the map yet.
  • Easy-Moderate Difficulty: The trek is ideal for beginners with minimal fitness and no technical mountaineering.
  • Breathtaking Himalayan Scenery: You have sweeping vistas of Gangotri, Draupadi ka Danda, Bandarpoonch, and even Mt. Srikanth.
  • Meadow Magic: Dayara Bugyal on the way is the most picturesque meadow in India.

Best Time to Visit Surya Top Trek

The trek is open throughout the year but every season has a different atmosphere:

  • Summer (April–June): Lush green meadows, pleasant temperatures, and wildflowers.
  • Autumn (Sept–Nov): Fresh air, golden woods, and clear visibility.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Snow enthusiasts’ delight. The trail is dusted with fresh snow.
  • Avoid Monsoon (July–August): Trails become slippery, and views are cloud-covered.

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The Surya Top Trek is easy to moderate, ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers. You’ll need basic stamina and the ability to walk 6–8 km a day on mixed terrain.

Recommended Prep:

  • Brisk walks (30–40 mins) daily
  • Practice trekking with a backpack
  • Strengthening core and legs (squats, lunges)

Accommodation and Food

The primary accommodation on the Surya Top Trek is camping. The majority of the trekking agencies offer:

  • Dome tents, sleeping mattresses, sleeping bags
  • Hygienic veg food (dal, chapati, sabzi, rice)
  • Evening soup/snacks and hot tea

For the benefit of the local economy, certain homestays can also be found in Raithal and Gui.

Things to Carry

  • Trekking shoes with good grip
  • Warm layers (particularly for nighttime)
  • Waterproof jacket & poncho
  • Gloves, thermals, woolen cap
  • Backpack (40L min), trekking poles
  • Water bottle, headlamp, power bank
  • Basic medicines, lip balm, sunscreen

Leave No Trace

Surya Top Trek is one of its lesser-seen beauties. Keep it that way by:

  • Bringing back all plastic and trash
  • Steer clear of loud music or campfires
  • Respecting local flora, fauna, and customs
