When summer arrives and the weather turns hot and unpleasant, the northeast of India provides an escape to coolness. Located in the luscious green hills of Meghalaya, Shillong is often referred to as the “Scotland of the East”. But just beyond the beauty of Shillong are some equally picturesque hill stations that would provide a great retreat into the cool, peaceful hills. If you plan to travel during the summer, these five hill stations near Shillong are places worthy to explore for nature lovers, adventurers, or people looking for solitude.

So whether you are a backpacker rolling solo, traveling with your pals, or planning a family trip, you are assured of scenic destinations that will allow you to refresh your mind and body, while enriching your soul with culture.

1. Cherrapunji –The Land of Living Root Bridges

One of its main draws are the living root bridges, intricately woven and made by the Khasi tribe of India using tree roots. Trekking for oneself here is a unique experience, as the mossy foliage and green biodiversity will support you through your journey. For those who care about finding peace and nature in its purest form, it is a very good option.
