What is Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej, or “Green Teej,” is the onset of the monsoon season and the celebration of the union between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Celebrated mainly by women in North India, it is a festival of love, faith, prosperity, and nature.

Women wear bright green clothes, keep fasts, get mehendi (henna) applied on their hands, sing folk songs, and swing on elaborately decorated jhulas (swings) – all surrounded by greenery.

Cultural & Spiritual Significance

Hariyali Teej has great importance in Hindu mythology. It commemorates the day that Goddess Parvati was reunited with Lord Shiva after she spent years doing penance. Women offer prayers for conjugal satisfaction, childbearing, and the health and long life of their husbands, so this day becomes significant for them if they are married.

The green color represents new starts, development, and lushness of monsoons.
