There’s something poetic about crossing over. It’s not just a physical journey, but a shift in perspective, in emotion. That is just what the Hampta Pass Trek offers, which stretches from the green Kullu Valley to the lunar-like scenery of Spiti, both stunning regions of Himachal Pradesh. Seeing nature turn the page is like that. Beginning in Jobra, close to Manali, this path slowly grows through forests, fields and glaciers before arriving at a narrow mountain pass that provides access to an entirely new world. Wildflowers and streams abound on one side, while the other is bare, unvarnished, and quiet. It feels like walking through two different planets in five days, all within Himachal Pradesh.
Why choose the Hampta Pass Trek?
This is the trek for people who want a little bit of everything. If you’re someone who craves forest trails, alpine meadows, river crossings, snow patches, and high-altitude passes all in one short itinerary within Himachal Pradesh, Hampta Pass won’t disappoint.
For beginners who want to try high-altitude trekking without becoming overwhelmed, it’s ideal. All you need is an open mind and an eager heart, neither technical equipment nor mountaineering expertise. You may even be able to see the pass framed by golden Spiti hues on one side and snow on the other if you time it well, showcasing the diverse landscapes of Himachal Pradesh.
Trek Highlights
- Chika Campsite – A perfect blend of green pastures, boulder-strewn streams, and forested edges. The first campsite sets the tone for scenic calm.
- Balu ka Ghera – A broad, open valley that is often included in patches of snow. You’ll get a genuine sense of awe and quiet for the first time there.
- Hampta Pass Summit – Standing at around 14,000 feet, the pass is narrow, dramatic, and a stunning divide between two stark landscapes.
- Descent to Spiti – The green disappears as you come down from the pass. It feels Martian as you enter this wide, barren environment.
- Chandratal Lake (optional) – A high-altitude, blue lake set in the Spiti Alps. This lovely trip is the ideal conclusion, if the weather permits.
Day-wise Itinerary

A 5-6 hour trek that gradually climbs through wildflower meadows and rock-strewn paths. Watch for snow bridges and marmots.

The most difficult and long day. Get started early. The pass offers breathtaking views after a tough climb. Carefully drop to the Siagoru campground on the snow and scree.
Day 4: Siagoru to Chatru
An easier walk through glacial valleys and streams. Chatru is where Spiti begins. If the road is open, drive to Chandratal.
Day 5: Drive to Manali via Rohtang Pass
A difficult but beautiful journey back to civilization that crosses Rohtang Pass and winds through the breathtaking scenery of Lahaul.
Difficulty Level and Preparation
This trek is moderate. It doesn’t require technical climbing, but the summit day can be long and tiring. Altitude sickness is a possibility above 12,000 feet, so stay hydrated and don’t rush. Start prepping at least three weeks before with cardio, stair climbing, and light strength training. Even brisk walks for 45 minutes a day can help. Mental readiness is just as important.
