Kedar Tal Trek
Kedar Tal Trek

Not all treks breathe peace — some bellow with unbridled Himalayan power, and the Kedar Tal Trek is one such. Beginning from the temple town of Gangotri, the trek cuts a sharp trail through battered mountains, steep ascents, and glacial ground to the mystical Kedar Tal — a glacial lake glinting at 4,750 meters, beneath the feet of Thalay Sagar and Bhrigupanth peaks.

This is a trek for the resolute — those who want to go beyond the ordinary, not only in terms of height but also of vision. It’s a raw, unforgiving, and visually mesmerizing trail that leads you deep into the embrace of Uttarakhand‘s high Himalayas.

Why Take Up the Kedar Tal Trek?

Because it’s one of the only hikes in India that brings you eyeball-to-eyeball with giants. The Kedar Tal Trek, located in Uttarakhand, is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking adventure, seclusion, and breathtaking alpine scenery.

The unspoiled grandeur of the trail — no villages, no throngs — only rock, ice, howling winds, and Himalayan splendor. It’s an authentic high-altitude wilderness adventure, starting with the spiritual murmur of Gangotri and concluding in the serene grandeur of a glacial amphitheater.

Trek Highlights

  • Kedar Tal (4,750 m)

A turquoise glacial lake glistening behind towering mountains. It’s said to be Lord Shiva’s celestial consort’s resting site.

  • Thalay Sagar (6,904 m)

One of the most spectacular rock faces of Garhwal Himalayas, towering like a black sentinel on the side of the lake.

  • Gangotri Temple (3,100 m)

The journey begins from this sacred Char Dham shrine, infusing a spiritual touch to the adventure.

  • Bhoj Kharak and Kedar Kharak Campsites

Rustic and breathtaking alpine meadows studded with wildflowers and backed by snow peaks.

  • A True Alpine Challenge

With its sharp ascents, rocky fall areas, and glacier moraine, this trek is for adventurers who seek high-altitude ruggedness and scenic beauty.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Gangotri (3,100 m)

Travel by road through Uttarkashi by the Bhagirathi River to arrive at the sacred town of Gangotri. Rest and acclimatize.

Day 2: Acclimatization Day at Gangotri

Visit Gangotri Temple, hike to nearby Gaumukh viewpoint or just relax to acclimatize.

Day 3: Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak trek (8 km)

Narrow and precipitous path amidst birch woods and rock outcrops. Arrive in Bhoj Kharak and camp over amidst pine-fringed cliffs.

Day 4: Trek from Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak (5 km)

Short but craggy segment going through rockfall zones and glacial area. The view begins to open up to giant peaks.

Day 5: Kedar Kharak to Kedar Tal and back trek (9–10 km)

A challenging climb to Kedar Tal. See the magnificent lake nestled below Thalay Sagar. Back to Kedar Kharak for the night.

Day 6: Drive back to Gangotri via Bhoj Kharak

Down by the same spectacular trail, following your way back through the valley.

Day 7: Drive back to Dehradun

Back with weary legs but minds full of mountain memories.

Difficulty Level and Preparation

Kedar Tal Trek is graded as difficult, with reasons of altitude, steep climbs, and technical trail with loose rock and scree patches.

Prepare 4–6 weeks in advance:

  • Cardio daily (running, cycling, swimming – 30–45 minutes)
  • Strength training – legs and core
  • Rehearsal of wearing a 6–8 kg backpack on treks
  • Basic breathing exercises to cope with high-altitude effort
  • Previous high-altitude trekking experience is highly desirable.

Best Time to Visit

  • Mid-May to June – Snow still persists close to the lake, skies are mostly clear
  • September to mid-October – Freshness after monsoon, excellent visibility, fewer crowds
  • Skip July–August for landslides and slush, and winters for heavy snowfall and extreme weather.

Permits and Regulations

  • Take a Gangotri National Park entry permit
  • ID proof is a must (carry original + photocopies)
  • It is a must to trek with an accredited guide

Trekking Manners

  • Leave no trace – take your rubbish away
  • Avoid noise or music in peaceful places
  • Drink plenty and don’t overwork at high altitude
  • Be respectful of local customs and temple etiquette in Gangotri

Accommodation and Essentials

Stay Options:

  • Guesthouses in Gangotri
  • Tents at Bhoj Kharak and Kedar Kharak (arranged by trek operators)

What to Bring:

  • Down jacket and thermal clothing
  • High-ankle waterproof trekking boots
  • Rain jacket and quick-dry clothing
  • Gloves, balaclava, wool socks
  • Trekking pole and sturdy backpack with cover
  • Water bottles, energy bars, dry fruits
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm
  • First-aid kit, AMS meds, headlamp
  • Sleeping bag (if not provided)

A Mirror to the Mountains, A Test of the Soul

The Kedar Tal Trek isn’t merely a trek to an altitude lake — it’s a challenge of your stamina, heart, and quiet. When you stand before Thalay Sagar mirrored in Kedar Tal, the sheer remoteness and grandeur of the Himalayas remind you of just how tiny — and how divine — your trekking is.

It’s not for everyone. But if you’re ready to earn every view, every breath, and every step — Kedar Tal is calling.
