Where is Shivpuri?

Shivpuri is a charming town in northern Madhya Pradesh, located around 120 km from Gwalior and 450 km from Delhi. It was once known as the summer capital of the Scindia rulers, this sweet, old-fashioned town now welcomes travellers with lush greenery, historic palaces, calm lakes, and a touch of royalty.

It is surrounded by forests and lies on the edge of the Madhav National Park, making it a great spot for those who love spotting wildlife and enjoying nature.

Must-Visit Attractions in Shivpuri

1.Madhav National Park

Madhav National Park is a pure paradise for nature lovers, it is home to leopards, nilgai, deer, and hundreds of bird species. The best time for a safari is early morning. Don’t forget your camera. The park also has thick forests, beautiful lakes, and watchtowers that add to the charm of your wildlife adventure. It is an ideal visit for those looking to reconnect with nature and spot wildlife in their natural life.

2.Sakhya Sagar Lake

Sakhya Sagar Lake is a peaceful lake lying within the national park and is perfect for birdwatching. You can even spot crocodiles playing around (Don’t go and start playing with them, crocodiles don’t love you). Boating is available and totally worth it. The clean water shines, especially during sunrise and sunset, creates a mind relaxing escape from the chaos of daily life. Keep an eye out for migratory birds that often visit during winter months.

3.Chhatris of Shivpuri

These royal memorials are highly built in Indo-Islamic architecture and dedicated to the Scindia rulers. The peaceful feeling and beautiful drawings make them perfect for quiet reflection and Insta-worthy photos.
Each chhatri tells a silent story of royal heritage and timeless elegance, surrounded by lush gardens and reflective ponds that make it a serene historical walk.

4.George Castle

Yes, a castle in the middle of a forest. Built for King George V’s visit (which never happened, what a thing – Jis ke liye bnwaya wohi hi nhi aaye), it offers royal views of the forest and is a great hiking destination.
The trek to the castle itself is an adventure, winding through forest walks and birdcalls. Once you reach the top, the view of the lush landscape is absolutely breath-taking

5.Bhadaiya Kund

This natural spring with cold, fresh water is believed to have healing properties. A great place to chill and unwind.
Locals often come here to relax and take a dip in the refreshing spring, especially during summer. The surrounding area is perfect for picnics and leisurely walks.

6.Narwar Fort

Narwar fort is located about 40 km from Shivpuri, this historic fort stands atop a hill and is full of legends, old-world charm, and breath-taking views.
The fort’s maze of courtyards, arches, and hidden passageways will transport you back in time. It’s an explorer’s delight, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside from its ramparts.

Shivpuri’s Culinary Scene

Shivpuri might be a small town, but its food will surprise your taste buds.

Must-Try Local Dishes –

  • Poha & Jalebi – Your classic MP breakfast, light and flavourful. The spicy poha with namkeen and sev (OMG loving it). The pure desi ghee jalebis (a small tip eat them with rabri or hot milk)
  • Bhutte Ka Kees – The grated corn cooked with milk and spices.
  • Dal Bafla – A local twist to Dal Baati, served with loads of ghee.
  • Kachori and Samosa – This is found in every street corner, served hot with tangy chutney.

The prices usually range from ₹10 to ₹50 for snacks, and around ₹200 for a hearty meal at local restaurants.

Best Street Food Spots –

  • Civil Lines Market – The ultimate food street for chaat, samosas, and poha.
  • Near Bus Stand – Try spicy aloo tikki and golgappas with teekha paani.
  • Madhav Chowk – Local joints serve some mean jalebis and piping hot chai.

Shopping in Shivpuri

While Shivpuri isn’t a major shopping hub, it does have a few unique things to offer:

  • Handicrafts and Woodwork – Pick up locally made wooden artifacts and home decor items.
  • Traditional Fabrics – Some local shops sell handwoven cotton and block-printed fabric.
  • Local Spices and Snacks – Don’t forget to take back some spicy sev, masalas, and pickles.

The Main Bazaar and Gandhi Market are good for souvenir shopping. You can bargain as well. I guess everyone loves bargaining.

Hidden Gems around Shivpuri

  • Tatya Tope Memorial – A historical site dedicated to the freedom fighter. Not very crowded, and perfect for history lovers.
  • Karera Bird Sanctuary – This is around 55 km away, the sanctuary is perfect for bird watchers. A home to the endangered Great Indian Bustard.
  • Pawa Waterfall – A lesser-known but beautiful waterfall, great for day picnics and insta-worthy pics.
  • Ban Ganga – A quiet, sacred place with natural springs and mythological importance.

Best Time to Visit Shivpuri

The best time to plan your Shivpuri trip is from October to March. The weather is pleasantly cool and ideal for sightseeing and jungle safaris. Summers (April-June) can get a bit hot, while monsoons make the forests lush but slippery, so be cautious.

Final Thoughts

Shivpuri is that rare combination of peace, thrill, and charm. All wrapped in one dhamaakedar package. It is where you can watch a tiger ramp walk through the jungle in the morning, sip chai by a quiet lake in the afternoon, and gaze at stars from a castle by night.

“You don’t just explore in Shivpuri – you also breathe, feel, and connect.”

So whether you are planning a solo escape, a romantic trip, or a family adventure, Shivpuri promises memories that will stay long after the journey ends.

Pack your bags, charge your smartphone, and let this pure beauty surprise you.
