Planning a budget friendly trip to Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the most affordable destinations for travel in Southeast Asia, and no wonder it is one of the new favorites of Indian travelers. It has a very beautiful landscape, rich cultural heritage, modern history, and delectable street food that would make this place a perfect destination for budget-conscious travelers. This guide will help you plan an unforgettable but inexpensive trip to Vietnam, whether traveling alone, with friends, or with family.

Why Choose Vietnam for a Budget Trip?

Vietnam is one of the most budget-friendly destinations, especially for Indian travelers. Since the country shares many similarities with India in terms of culture and is really close to the country, Vietnam stands out as a strong option for those seeking the opportunity of traveling through the Southeast Asian region without overspending a fortune. The country’s mix of history, culture, natural beauty, and affordability of amenities makes it perfect for first-time travelers as well as seasoned adventurers.

From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the vibrant city of Ho Chi Minh, there’s something for everyone. The country is home to mesmerizing landscapes, including lush rice terraces, beautiful beaches, and mystical limestone caves. Add to that the delicious street food, which is not only tasty but incredibly cheap, and you’ve got all the ingredients for an unforgettable budget vacation.

Best Cities to Visit in Vietnam

If you are visiting Vietnam for the first time, consider focusing on three major cities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), and Da Nang. The cities have a good mix of historical landmarks, modern attractions, local markets, and beautiful landscapes that will make your trip worthwhile.

1.Hanoi: This is the capital city, rich in history, charming Old Quarter, and serene lakes. It has recently been voted the World’s Best Culinary City Destination at the 2024 World Culinary Awards. Hanoi is an excellent place for food lovers, culture enthusiasts, and those interested in exploring Vietnam’s historical roots.

2.Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): Ho Chi Minh City is the country’s largest city and a vibrant, very energetic city with a modern infrastructure and plenty of activities to do for a tourist. Whether a shopaholic, gourmand, or sightseer, there’s something here for everyone.

3.Da Nang: This is a coastal city that is known for its beautiful beaches, historical sites, and closeness to the ancient town of Hoi An. Da Nang is an excellent destination for those who seek relaxation by the beach, taste local seafood, and explore the rich history of Vietnam.

How to Get to Vietnam on a Budget

There are a number of things you will have to remember as you are getting ready to go. Below is information concerning visas, flight, and Vietnam transportation.

Visa

India citizens can come to Vietnam for a visa via two different approaches;

E-Visa: Indian passport holders can opt for an e-visa, by merely following an online application process, which is simple and efficient. You get an email with an approval letter but, during entry, accommodation and return flight are often demanded as a proof.

Visa on Arrival (VOA): The pre-approval letter issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department is needed to apply for a visa on arrival. It can be done online, and upon approval, you can collect your visa at the airport. This method is mostly convenient but needs prior paperwork.

You may also collect the Vietnam Entry Visa from the closest Vietnamese embassy or consulate in India. The time it takes to process the visa is approximately 5-7 working days.

Cost of the Visa

The Single entry visa is valid for 30 days: This costs approximately about USD 44, which means around INR 3,000.

Multiple entry visa for 30 days: This is for about USD 64, which is roughly INR 5,000.

Flights to Vietnam

Flights to Vietnam are relatively low-priced, even if you do not book advance. Direct flights are available from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. These are some options:

Vietnam Airlines offers direct flights from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City. Economy fares typically start at INR 32,000+ for a round trip.

The low-cost carrier, VietJet Air, is selling tickets from Mumbai to Ho Chi Minh City starting from INR 28,000+ for return. However, note that a few of VietJet flights have more extended return duration; hence it is always good to check the return flight duration before booking.

Budget Accommodation in Vietnam

There is perhaps no country with cheaper budget accommodations anywhere than Vietnam. Whether hostels, homestays and budget hotels or Airbnb, every individual has his or her own budget range within which he or she is ready to spend.

Hostels: Hostelworld has more than 390 hostels in 31 locations across Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, a private room starts at INR 1,200 per night, and dorm beds are half the price.

Airbnb: Airbnb charges INR 1,400 for a night’s stay in private rooms; renting the entire flat costs between INR 4,000 and more, depending upon the location.

Homestays: Homestays are cheaper options; a few such can be found for around INR 5,000 for 4 nights. Make sure you book through licensed operators, just to ensure quality and safety.

Getting Around Vietnam on a Budget

Vietnam has a fully developed transportation system, so moving around the country without breaking the bank is easy.

Public Transport

Buses: Vietnam Railways operates a 2,600 km-long train network connecting north and south parts of the country. Long distance buses are easily available for the budget traveler.

Open-Tour Buses: These buses are very popular among budget travelers. They are a great way to visit different cities in Vietnam. They are very useful for intercity travel between the southern and central regions.

Renting a Scooter or Bicycle: Scooters/Mopeds: A scooter or moped is the cheapest way to roam around Vietnam. The rent can be between 150,000 to 300,000 VND per day (around INR 500 to INR 1,000).

Bicycles: For a small distance, one can hire a bicycle for 20,000 VND per day (approximately INR 60).

Taxis and Ride-Hailing Apps:Taxis are also available in most cities. You can also use ride-hailing apps like Grab to save money on local transportation.

Tips for Saving Money in Vietnam

1.Haggle at Markets: Bargaining is a common practice in Vietnam. Whether you’re shopping for souvenirs or street food, try negotiating to get the best price.

2.Flights to Ho Chi Minh City Are Cheaper: If you’re booking flights, keep in mind that flights into Ho Chi Minh City tend to be more affordable than those into Hanoi.

3.Eat Like a Local: Street food in Vietnam is not only delicious but also incredibly cheap. A meal from a local eatery can cost 35-40% less than dining at upscale restaurants.

4.Visit Free Attractions: Many pagodas, temples, and cathedrals in Vietnam offer free entry. Explore these cultural gems to get a taste of local history without spending a dime.

5.Shop Smart: Tourist markets like Ho Chi Minh City’s Ben Thanh Market tend to be overpriced for souvenirs. Try going to lesser tourist markets like Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi or Cholon Market (Binh Tay Market) in Chinatown for a better bargain.

Best Things to Do in Vietnam on a Budget

1.Ha Long Bay Exploration: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ha Long Bay is the beautiful limestone islands formation. The bay offers an inexpensive boat tour as well as the possibility of taking a kayak out on your own.

2.Hanoi Old Quarter and other Historic Places: See the Hanoi Old Quarter and visit the Hoan Kiem Lake. Not to miss: the Temple of Literature—the country’s first university.

3.Relax on Da Nang Beaches: Enjoy the beautiful coastline of Da Nang, where you can sunbathe, swim, or explore the nearby Marble Mountains.

4.Take a Walking Tour of Ho Chi Minh City: Wander around District 1 and visit attractions like the War Remnants Museum, the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, and Ben Thanh Market.

5.Explore Hoi An’s Ancient Town: Hoi An’s ancient town is UNESCO-listed with its beautiful narrow streets, full of markets, and ancient temples.

Vietnam is a good opportunity for the Indian traveler to explore Southeast Asia without burning his pocket. Rich in culture, history, and economy-friendly accommodation, transportation, it is a perfect destination for budget travelers. Vietnam offers for every soul-be it local culture, delectable street foods, or serene landscapes-so plan your itinerary now, pack up your bags, and get ready to embark on one of the ultimate budget-friendly experiences of your lifetime!
