The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread rain alerts as the 2025 monsoon progresses across the country. Key regions like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are already witnessing heavy rainfall, with forecasts indicating more showers and storms in the coming days.

This detailed update provides a state-by-state look at rainfall patterns, alerts, and travel advice to help citizens and travelers navigate the season safely and smartly.

Current Monsoon Status & Rain Alerts

The southwest monsoon has now covered major parts of central and northwestern India. Above-normal rainfall is being recorded in states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, while Delhi and northern states are experiencing intensified showers after a prolonged heatwave.

The IMD predicts more than 106% of the average rainfall this year — a positive sign for agriculture, but also a concern for landslides, flooding, and urban water logging.

Delhi & NCR

The capital region experienced thunderstorms and heavy rain around June 21, causing traffic delays and waterlogging in several areas. The IMD has issued red alerts and expects strong surface winds (up to 80 km/h).

Travelers should avoid low-lying zones and monitor city advisories before commuting.

Maharashtra

Western Maharashtra, especially Pune, Ratnagiri, and Thane, is receiving intense rainfall. Lonavala recorded over 120 mm in 24 hours. The Mumbai-Goa highway saw flooding in several segments.

Red and orange alerts are active for multiple districts. Tourists are advised to postpone hill station visits, especially to Lonavala, Matheran, and Mahabaleshwar, during peak downpours.

Gujarat

Gujarat is bracing for heavy showers, especially in Bhavnagar, Rajkot, and Ahmedabad. Overflowing dams such as Shetrunji are being monitored. The IMD has placed the state under red and orange alerts.

Road and rail traffic may be impacted. Local administrations have been advised to prepare for emergency evacuations in flood-prone zones.

Northern & Central India

Eastern UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Chhattisgarh are next in line for the monsoon. Rainfall is expected to intensify from June 20 onwards. IMD has also predicted rain for Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab by late June.

Pilgrims heading to spiritual destinations like Kedarnath and Badrinath must remain alert to road and weather updates.

Other Rain-Intensive Regions

  • Kerala & Coastal Karnataka: Red alerts in districts like Kannur and Malappuram.
  • Goa: Intermittent intense rainfall with potential for flash floods.
  • Northeast India: Assam and Meghalaya continue to witness very heavy rainfall with river level warnings in effect.

Why This Matters

This year’s robust monsoon is crucial for agriculture and water reserves, but it also increases the likelihood of flash floods, landslides, and disruption of essential services.

Urban centers may face drainage and power issues. Tourists and locals must stay alert and plan their movements accordingly.

Safety Tips for Travelers and Locals

  • Subscribe to IMD or local SDRF alerts.
  • Avoid traveling to red or orange alert districts unless essential.
  • Keep emergency kits ready with water, dry food, ID, and medications.
  • Monitor transportation updates for buses, trains, and flights.
  • Avoid parking or walking near overflowing rivers, dams, and under-construction areas.

The 2025 monsoon has arrived with strength and variability. While it brings relief from heat and rejuvenates nature, it also calls for caution and preparation.

Whether you’re commuting in a metro like Delhi, planning a road trip in Maharashtra, or visiting Gujarat’s coast, stay weather-aware. Follow IMD updates, plan with flexibility, and prioritize safety at every step.
