Following a short hiatus in tourism following a recent terror attack, Jammu & Kashmir is rolling out the welcome mat to tourists once again. In a firm demonstration of resilience and hopefulness, the J&K government has reopened 16 favorite visitor sites, writing a new page of recovery and revival for the tourism sector in the region.

Revered for its unparalleled natural grandeur, religious importance, and cultural richness, Jammu & Kashmir is among India’s most valued travel destinations. The opening up of these sites is more than a logistical move—it’s a signal that peace, tourism, and local economies are all being given equal importance.

Safety First: Tourism with Precaution

Authorities have assured tourists that the increased security measures are now in force in all the reopened sites. With tighter surveillance, coordination between local police and tourism authorities, and constant monitoring, tourists can now visit the area with greater confidence.

Particular focus is given to ensuring safe travel, authentic tour operators, and secure stay, particularly in far-flung and high-altitude regions.

The 16 Reopened Tourist Destinations

These are the 16 places that have recently opened up to tourists:

Kashmir Region:

  • Srinagar – The Kashmir center with Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, and old-fashioned houseboats
  • Gulmarg – Skiing, cable cars, and white landscapes
  • Pahalgam – A green valley for nature enthusiasts and newlyweds
  • Sonamarg – The “Meadow of Gold,” gateway to glacier hikes
  • Doodhpathri – A off-the-beaten-track alpine meadow bordered by pine groves
  • Yusmarg – A serene hill station close to Budgam with rural beauty
  • Kupwara – Famed for its picturesque valleys such as Bangus and Lolab
  • Gurez Valley – Isolated but stunning, yet more accessible and safe now

Jammu Region:

  • Katra (Vaishno Devi) – One of India’s most popular pilgrimage destinations, visited by millions every year
  • Patnitop – Popular hill resort with clean air, scenery, and adventure
  • Sanasar – Paragliding and offbeat camping paradise
  • Bhaderwah – Also referred to as “Mini Kashmir” due to its natural beauty
  • Reasi – Near Chenab Bridge and other historic places
  • Akhnoor – With historic forts and the Chenab riverbank beauty

Other Areas:

  • Mantalai – A spiritual haven encircled by mountains and forests
  • Bani-Basohli – Famous for miniature paintings, lakes, and peaceful surroundings

What This Means for Travelers

The reopening presents local and foreign tourists with a new opportunity to rediscover the region’s beauty—fondly called “Heaven on Earth.” From Gulmarg’s snowy peaks to Katra’s spiritual tranquility, every destination presents a distinctive blend of adventure, culture, and peace.

Tourism has a direct influence on thousands of livelihoods—hoteliers, guides, transport operators, and artisans—so your visit not only satisfies your wanderlust but benefits local communities as well.

Travel Advisory and Tips

  • Register your travel itinerary with official tourism websites or local government authorities.
  • Adhere to vetted accommodations and tour services.
  • Be mindful of local customs and avoid sensitive regions unless authorized.
  • Bring valid ID cards and keep yourself informed about weather or travel advisories.
  • Travel insurance is advisable for isolated or high-altitude travel.

The reopening of 16 places in Jammu and Kashmir is a welcome move towards normalcy, resurgence, and development. The safety measures and promotion of responsible tourism undertaken by the government are a testament to the region’s eagerness to welcome visitors again.

Now is the moment to rediscover J&K—not only for its valleys and vistas, but for its unbreakable spirit. If you’re searching for a trip that provides natural beauty, cultural depth, and a sense of purpose, then Jammu and Kashmir is ready for you.
