Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is among the most religious hikes for Hindus, with lakhs of pilgrims each year traveling to the divine temples of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Yet, when Char Dham Yatra 2025 comes around, authorities reported that there was a huge drop this time in online registrations from last years. This decline has raised an eyebrow regarding the number of pilgrims expected during Char Dham Yatra this year, commencing on April 30, 2025. This article discusses the cause for the lower registrations, how it affects Uttarakhand’s pilgrimage tourism, and what pilgrims can expect from Char Dham Yatra 2025, including information regarding offline registration.

Even as the spiritual fervour and emotional gravitas that accompany this sacred pilgrimage, the 2025 season is slow off the starting blocks. Traditionally, the Char Dham Yatra sees millions of devotees travel agonising routes and weather cycles in quest of blessings and spiritual brownie points. This season, however, has recorded numbers unable to deliver the same rush, raising question and concern among local authorities, temple trust, and hospitality interests. In this context, having the knowledge of the shift in pilgrim movement and the plan and logistics adjustments carries significance for everyone thinking of participating in the Char Dham Yatra this year.

A Decline in Char Dham Yatra Registrations

As per latest reports, the Char Dham Yatra 2025 has witnessed a significant dip in online bookings. Around 29.5 lakh devotees were registered in the first 34 days in 2024 and 48 lakh pilgrims at the end of the season. In the current year, however, the mid-April 2025 number was only 17.76 lakh registrations. The decline in Char Dham Yatra pilgrims was unexpected for the authorities, who had estimated 80-90 lakh devotees, with some expecting a record one crore tourists. The government of Uttarakhand had increased the online registration limit from 60% to 75% to cater to the expected influx of devotees for the Char Dham Yatra, but the present trend has prompted a recalculation of preparations. Kedarnath tops the list with 6.5 lakh registrations, followed by Badrinath (5.8 lakh), Gangotri (3.4 lakh), and Yamunotri (3.1 lakh).

Reasons for Fewer Devotees for Char Dham Yatra 2025

There may be certain reasons for the low registrations for Char Dham Yatra 2025. The recent terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, in which 26 lives were lost, the majority of whom were tourists, has put security in the forefront. Even though Uttarakhand is an independent state, its geographical location near Jammu and Kashmir and the common Himalayan landscape may have deterred pilgrims from undertaking the Char Dham Yatra this year. Unpredictable weather conditions, such as flashfloods and landslides in the surrounding regions, is another issue, although continuous infrastructural developments such as improved roads and medical facilities. Medical cautions against pilgrims who are elderly and the physical strenuousness of Char Dham Yatra can also be a reason for delaying the trip.

Char Dham Yatra 2025 preparations

The government of Uttarakhand is set on performing a safe and smooth Char Dham Yatra 2025 even after witnessing a slump in registration. The yatra will commence on April 30 with the opening of temples at Yamunotri and Gangotri, Kedarnath on May 2, and Badrinath on May 4. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized, “We are determined to make Char Dham Yatra easy, comfortable, and safe for all pilgrims.” The slogan “Sugam, Sukhad aur Surakshit” (Easy, Comfortable, and Safe) supports this determination.
To deal with the pilgrimage, registration counters have also been opened alongside Char Dham Yatra routes: Gauchar for Badrinath, Heena and Uttarkashi for Gangotri, Dobata and Damta for Yamunotri, and Guptkashi for Kedarnath. Offline registration, introduced to help the internet-less ones, started from April 25, 2025. Offline registration will also be started from April 28 from locations such as Haridwar and Rishikesh. The Uttarakhand government has also changed the registration process. This year, only 60% registrations will be online and 40% offline. This new regulation could have impacted the online figures. Pilgrims can approach these counters with a valid identity (Aadhaar card, voter ID, or passport) and passport-size photo. The process involves form-filling, checking of details, and issuing of a registration slip for Char Dham Yatra registration. Online registration continues to be accessible at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand application through Aadhaar and mobile number.

Security and Safety Arrangements

Safety becomes the priority for Char Dham Yatra 2025, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. The Uttarakhand Police have installed CCTV cameras at major points along the pilgrimage routes, and live traffic and weather updates are being disseminated on social media. Health emergency and disaster response teams are in the waiting, and VVIP and emergency helicopter services are upgraded. Government also asked the known people to postpone or give up Char Dham Yatra from May 2 to May 31 as the peak month to cut the numbers. The pilgrims suffering from any ailments should consider taking medical clearance since the Char Dham Yatra is at altitude.

Impact on Uttarakhand’s Pilgrimage Tourism

The reduction in registration for the Char Dham Yatra 2025 could impact the economy of Uttarakhand, which is sustained by pilgrimage tourism. The Char Dham Yatra attracts pilgrims from India and outside India, supporting local enterprise such as hotels, transport, and retail shops in Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag. Fewer pilgrims would pose a challenge to these livelihoods, but the government’s forward action is designed to soften the blow. IRCTC’s helicopter base for the Kedarnath Yatra, from May 2 and booking on heliyatra.irctc.co.in, provides an alternative quicker, possibly making more visitors to the Char Dham Yatra as the season goes on.

Char Dham Yatra Tips for Pilgrims Planning

While planning the Char Dham Yatra 2025, follow the tips below:

  • Register Early: Register online or offline counters to book your place in the Char Dham Yatra.
  • Check Weather Updates: Keep yourself updated on Himalayan conditions along the Char Dham Yatra route.
  • Health Precautions: Consult a doctor and adhere to medicines for Char Dham Yatra needs.
  • Travel Light: Bring warm clothing, strong shoes, and a first-aid kit to the Char Dham Yatra terrain.

Offline Registration Process for Char Dham Yatra

Offline registration of the Char Dham Yatra 2025 is possible for those who are unable to do it online. From April 28, counters at the major locations—Gauchar, Heena, Uttarkashi, Dobata, Damta, and Guptkashi—are providing this facility. Offline registration will start from April 28 at Haridwar and Rishikesh, for instance. Devotees are requested to present a valid identity (Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport) and a passport photo. On-site, officials help fill in a registration form with personal information, such as name, age, and phone number. Once confirmed, a registration slip is released, reserving the pilgrim’s spot in Char Dham Yatra. The process is inclusive, and even those who don’t have internet access can participate in the pilgrimage safely.

A Spiritual Journey Amid Challenges

Char Dham Yatra 2025 could be less pilgrimage-y with lower registration but continues to possess divine power behind it. Aimed at leading people to moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death), the Char Dham Yatra still serves as a source of inspiration to the Hindus of the world. In spite of the backdrop of security issues regarding the attack on Pahalgam and issues related to unfavorable weather, the Uttarakhand government’s attempt towards a safe, well-organized Char Dham Yatra reveals a lot about their commitment.
When the Char Dham Yatra commenced on 30th April, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath temples welcome the devotees. Despite dwindling numbers, the essence of the Char Dham Yatra remains intact, offering a journey of faith and perseverance in 2025.
