Chopta- Mini Switzerland

A very suitable spot for beholding the title of Mini Switzerland, Chopta is a trekker’s heaven. An unscathed beauty of Uttarakhand. it serves as a base camp for trekking to Tungnath and Chandrashila.

The treks of these regions are of moderate type where mediocre trekkers can brush up their skills and gain some experience. Chopta covers a small angle in the pie chart of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary’s area.

Located at an elevation of 8,790ft, Chopta offers awe-inspiring views of Nanda Devi, Chaukhmaba and Trishul peaks. It is the proud home to some rare species of birds and hence bird watching is quite an adventure here. Apart from birds, there is also a rich diversity of flora and fauna in Chopta.

This small land of meadows is accessible by roads, rails as well as air. The NH58 highway will lead you to Rudraprayag from where you can follow the Kedarnath route and go for Ukimath in the way.

Chopta is just 40kms from Ukimath. The Rishikesh railway station is 100kms away from Chopta and is the nearest. If you wish to go by flight the Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun is the nearest.

Weather Report

Spring is the season to witness the radiant colors of Chopta. After shedding its snow cover, this spot breathes fresh with blooming flowers and different types of fauna can be spotted here and there.

Summer stays from March - May, is pleasant and comforting. Monsoon spans over July - September, a good time to visit. Winter ranges from October - February, the magical time when Mini Switzerland comes alive.

  • Tungnath Temple: Snuggled at an elevation of 3680m, Tungnath is the highest temple of Lord Shiva in India. It is one of the temples in the Panch Kedar Temple series of five temples.
  • Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary: Spot the musk deer with your binoculars in this sanctuary ranging over an area of 5 sq/km.

Major trekking expedition of Chopta:

  • Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila trek: Perfect for the newbies and mediocre this trek provides you with majestic views of Nanda Devi, Kedarnath and Neelkanth. On the whole trek, you will be greeted by blooming Rhododendrons and tall Oak and Deodar trees.
  • The best time to embark on this expedition is from March-May, when the weather is pleasant and the view is mesmerizing. You can go in groups of 2 to 12. In this trek, you will get to walk for around 30kms, that you have to cover in 5 days, pretty good jog ha!!!
