Must Know Before You Travel to Gulmarg

Top Places to Visit in Gulmarg

1. Apharwat Peak

The height of this peak is 4,390 meters. It is the most scenic view of snow-capped mountains. It is a heaven for skiers and trekkers with its powder snow and steep slopes.

2. Kongdori

Kongdori acts as a base for several activities like skiing and trekking in the middle of the Gulmarg Gondola ride. The green meadows in summer and snowfields in winter make it a very scenic spot.

3. Gulmarg Gondola

Gulmarg Gondola is one of the world’s highest cable cars. Divided into two phases, this provides a fantastic view of the Himalayas. A traveller should not ignore this attraction.

4. Ningle Nallah

A silent mountain stream passing through the valley, it has been ideal for picnics and photography too. Flanked by the tall pines and snowclad mountains on either side it is a pictorial retreat

5. Alpather Lake

This alpine lake is frozen during winter and turns into a beautiful blue water body in summer. A trek to Alpather Lake is rewarding for its serenity and breathtaking views.

6. Rani Temple

Rani Temple, also known as Maharani Temple, is a historical monument located in Gulmarg. This temple is popular due to its Bollywood connections and is set against a picturesque backdrop.

7. Baba Reshi Shrine

This 13th-century shrine is dedicated to Baba Payamuddin and is a spiritual place. Its intricate architecture and peaceful surroundings make it a must-visit for those seeking solace.

8. Drung Waterfall

Located near Tangmarg, Drung Waterfall is a mesmerizing sight, especially during winter when it freezes into a cascade of ice. It’s a hidden gem and a favorite among nature lovers.

Best Time to Visit Gulmarg

Summer (March to June)

Temperature: 13°C to 29°C

Highlights: Blooming flowers, lush green meadows, and pleasant weather for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Winter (October to February)

Temperature: -4°C to 11°C

Highlights: Snowfall, skiing, and snowboarding. Gulmarg turns into a winter wonderland and is a paradise for adventure lovers.

How to Reach Gulmarg

By Air

The nearest airport, Srinagar International Airport is 56 km from Gulmarg and very well connected with major cities in India. At the airport, one can take a taxi or bus to Gulmarg.

By Road

The other way to reach Gulmarg is through National Highway 1-A. It is 56 km from Srinagar, and cabs and buses can be found anywhere. The whole journey affords wonderful vistas of valleys and mountains.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi (290 km). Cabs and buses are available from here also, and a detour is made through Srinagar while proceeding to Gulmarg. 

Places to Visit Near Gulmarg

1. Kashmir

Kashmir Valley is a treasure of natural beauty known as “Paradise on Earth.” One can visit beautiful Mughal Gardens, the serene Dal Lake, and the vibrant tulip gardens in spring. It’s the richness in cultural heritage with breathtaking landscapes, which attracts so many visitors and tourists.

 2. Srinagar

The summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar is something of a melting pot; scenic beauty and cultural vibrancy blend beautifully with each other. It is very famous for its houseboats and Shikara rides on Dal and Nigeen Lakes besides its famous historical attractions such as Shankaracharya Temple and Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh).

3. Sonmarg

The “Meadow of Gold” is a scintillating wonder, complete with snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear rivers, and green meadows. Sonmarg serves as the entrance to the well-known Thajiwas Glacier and provides good trekking and camping facilities.

4. Pahalgam

Pahalgam is a place for those who prefer quiet destinations. It is aptly called a nature lover’s destination because of its lush valleys and Lidder River. The Amarnath Yatra base camp is also here. Betaab and Aru Valleys near it add more charm to this region.

5. Amarnath

It is an important holy place where an Amarnath Cave has the naturally formed ice Shivlinga and thousands of devotees reach this place on an annual pilgrimage called Amarnath Yatra. The journey to it is more of an adventure with sceneries of stunning mountains.

6. Gurez Valley

This offbeat destination, along the Line of Control, is famous for unspoiled beauty, wooden houses, and thundering Kishanganga River. The Gurez Valley is one such place which seeks solace in nature for the lovers of it.

7. Ladakh

Being a land with rugged terrain, monasteries, and high-altitude lakes Pangong and Tso Moriri, Ladakh is paradise for adventurers. Day 4: Day out excursion to Drung Waterfall with photography and nature walks.

Day 5: On the last day, at the time of departure, shopping for local handicrafts and souvenirs is advisable. One may also make further excursions around from here to Srinagar or Pahalgam.
