History of Tawang

The place has a crucial role in Indian-Chinese history. During medieval times it was part of Kingdom of Tibet. Tawang was ruled by local tribal rulers for most of the ancient time. Later, after the colonisation by the British, this area was declared as off-limits in 1873. After the independence of India, it fell under the territory of Republic of India and the Chinese army invaded Tawang in 1962 but they later withdrew.
