Santorini. The name speaks of whitewashed villages that cling to the cliffs, sunset views over the Aegean Sea, and a sense of idyllic tranquillity. But for the past three weeks, that picture postcard Greek island has been shaken — literally.  An unprecedented swarm of earthquakes hit Santorini, testing its residents’ resiliency, prompting a mass departure of both tourists and locals.

Within the last few days, over 40 tremors—one up to a magnitude of 4.9—have shaken this island. The present intensity is far worse than anything experienced by the region in recent times, and yet, experts are at a loss to explain this seismic activity. Fortunately, no major damage or injuries have been reported so far. But the continuous shaking has understandably created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

The ground literally is moving under their feet and, for most, the scenic beauty of Santorini now comes with the added taste of anxiety. Thousands are fleeing from the island at any cost whatsoever; ferries are full, and airlines have to make available extra flights at short notice. Schools have already been shut for precautionary purposes, and the decision to take families away was not an easy one.

While some of the visitors may be more injured to quakes in their own countries, the sheer quantity and intensity are disturbing. The experience is an intense reminder that even the most seemingly stable, beautiful places in the world are vulnerable.

It is a tough time for residents in Santorini. They are facing not only the short-term disruption of their lives but also possibly the long-term effect on their livelihood. Tourism is the lifeblood of Santorini, and the current situation is causing much concern among local businesses.  Visitors will be hesitant to return?  What is the duration of this seismic unrest that all this nonstop unrest will entail? These are the questions that weigh in the minds of those who have Santorini as their hometown.   Experts are trying to figure out what causes this atypical earthquake swarm.  They confirmed that this has nothing to do with volcanic activity, which Santorini is located atop a dormant volcano.  The scientists, however, cannot determine when the earthquakes will cease.  This aspect may be one of the toughest things in the situation.

The world watches Santorini, hoping for an end to this period of seismic storms.  It is a reminder that even in paradise, nature can remind us of its strength and power.  For now, the focus is on the safety and well-being of all island dwellers.  Santorini, the symbol of beauty and resilience, will undoubtedly face this challenge with the same strength it has accumulated in being the preferred destination for centuries.
