For centuries, mighty Rajputana rulers have praised the beauty of this prepossessing city and have made it their adobe. Yes, you guessed it right! The lake city of India has the charm of its own. The architectural grandeur and scenic landscape have made it a favorite tourist destination for local as well as global tourists. Udaipur is situated in the southern part of Rajasthan. The city is perched at an elevation of 598 meters, and spread in an area of 37 sq km. The city has been center of attraction for centuries due to its enthralling location. The mystic city is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and is situated on the edge of three magnificent lakes.

History of Udaipur

The city is said to be the most romantic city in the Indian subcontinent, but one can’t ignore the rich history of Udaipur. It was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh in 1559 as the capital of Kingdom of Mewar. The city upholds its history in the tales narrated by the captivating and grand palaces of the city.

How to reach Udaipur?

The place is a very famous holiday destination for tourists. Every year thousands of foreign tourists come here to explore the grandeur and royal hospitality of Rajputs. One can easily visit Udaipur any time in the year.

  • By air : The nearest airport is just 25 km from the city center. Udaipur airport is called Dabok Airport and is also known as Maharana Pratap Airport. Avail the taxi services from here and explore Udaipur.
  • By rail : Udaipur is well connected by rail to all other major cities of India. Udaipur Railway Station is the nearest one, from here many trains ply. Travel to this land of royals on the luxurious Place on Wheels.
  • By road : The state government has build-up a brilliant road network in and around Udaipur. Rajasthan Roadways provides the facility of Deluxe Buses and AC coaches for the convenience of passengers. One can also hire taxis and cars to reach Udaipur by road.

Places to visit in Udaipur

For the visitors of Udaipur, the city is the true reflection of Rajasthan’s rich culture. The temples, havelis, and countless narrow, crooked, timeless streets, endless tempting shops, ancient bazaars and unforgettable palaces is enough to attract travelers to explore Udaipur.

1) Udaipur City Palace

Constructed in 1559, the magnificent palace towers Lake Pichola. The courtyards, terraces, pavilions, hanging gardens, balconies, cupolas, and the towers of the palace gives a wonderful view of the lake and the surrounding city. Everything about the palace is awe-inspiring including the antiques, paintings, and architecture.

2) Lake Palace

The palace was originally called Jagniwas and served as a summer palace. Now it has been converted into a luxurious hotel. The architectural marvel is a sight to behold. The walls are made of black and white marbles, adorned with semi precious stones and ornamented niches. Gardens, fountains, pillared terraces, and columns line the courtyards of this alluring palace.

3) Jag Mandir

The place is also known as Lake Garden Palace. Built on an island in Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir has a rich history. The palace was used as a summer resort and party destination. This is the same place where Prince Khurram later Emperor Shah Jahan was given shelter here when he rebelled against his father Emperor Jahangir. Such is the marvel of this place that emperor Shah Jahan used it as an inspiration for the construction of the Taj Mahal.

4) Udaipur Biological Park

Located beneath the Monsoon Palace, Udaipur Biological park is also known as Sajjangarh Biological Park. The park is the home for a number of endangered species. The park received more than 46 thousand visitors in a month, upon its inauguration. If you are a wildlife enthusiast then visit here to get the sight of the Himalayan black bear, panthers, Indian porcupine, chital, ghariyal, marsh crocodile, white tiger, Asiatic lion etc.

These are just a few places to explore in Udaipur, the place holds much more beauty than words can express.
